What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization", and this is perhaps the most important tool you have to drive traffic to your website. SEO is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to the site from search engines through natural or un-paid search results, in contrast to Search Engine Marketing (SEM). You could be the most creative, innovative and technologically advanced web site known to man, but if you do not fully understand SEO, no one will ever find.

Why SEO is so important

Before I go into the details of how you can use for SEO to attract more traffic to your site, I would like to emphasize why it is so important. There are three basic ways to get new users. The most direct way is through paid advertising, how to use Google Adwords or advertising directly on sites that generates a lot of traffic. The disadvantage of this method is that it can take thousands and sometimes millions of dollars to generate enough traffic paid advertisements, to really get your site rolling. The second way to get people to know about your site through viral marketing. In other words, if your site is worthy of conversation, people will tell their friends about their service, and then these people will tell their friends, etc. The problem with this method, however, is the fact that it is very difficult to achieve. Even if your web site provides something incredible, or do something very taboo, it is very unlikely that people will bring up your site in everyday speech. Finally, the third way to bring people to your site by optimizing the key factors within your control to position your website at the top of search results. This is what SEO is all about. SEO is free and relatively easy imlement. That is why it is so important to get right.

How do Search Engines decide which results to display, and in what order?

Imagine that you are creating your own search engine and you ask yourself: "If someone makes a request, I order a web results page, that page with the best information would be on top?" Well, first of all, would like to see the contents of the results satisfy the user's request. Secondly, you probably want to show only trusted Web sites. Third, you would like web pages that are very narrowly on the content of the request. This may seem simple, but this is how all the major search engines do it!

Content

The most important way to improve your SEO is creating a lot of content, and update it frequently. This is the main reason that blogs have become so popular in the past ten years or so. However, if your site is a service that offers very little content, your site will probably be a very bad place in search engines. If, on the other hand, you have a simple site, which only outputs content (eg blog), then your site will rank well in search engines.

Reliability

The standard way to measure confidence in the website is to measure the number of people who link to the site. That's the idea. If your site sucks, no one will be linking to you. On the other hand, if your site offers useful services or content, many people will be linking to you. In other words, the second way to increase the SEO is to do everything you can get a lot of people to link to your website.

Narrow Focus

Finally, the third way that search engines ranking your site in search results to assess how narrowly the web page on request. This is done by looking at the META tag name of the Web page and also looking at the URL. For example, if the name of your web page "How to catch fireflies," and the URL of the article is "yourwebsite.com / how to catch-and-firefly.html" search engines at once understand what your web page very narrowly about catching fireflies .
